Wakeboarding Zone

Wakeboarding is an adrenaline pumping water sport, which combines water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques. Wakeboarding involves riding a wakeboard on a surface of water, while being towed by a motorboat. The speed of the motorboat depends on many things, such as the rider’s experience, the water conditions, the board size, etc.

The Wakeboard:
Wakeboards are buoyant, and their core is usually made up of foam or honeycomb mixed with resin and coated with fiberglass. Also, metal screws are fitted in the board to enable riders to attach fins and bindings according to their preference. A rider may alter the fins according to his/her needs For instance; shallow fins are best suited for surface tricks. Manufacturers producing newer lines of wakeboards are experimenting with the shape and material to reduce the drag and ensure a smooth wakeboarding experience.

The Motorboat:
Although it is possible to use any motorboat that can achieve a minimum speed of about 18mph, it is advisable to use a motorboat especially constructed to meet the needs of wakeboarding. A major difference between a regular motorboat and a wakeboarding boat is the presence of the wakeboarding tower. The wakeboarding tower is normally constructed of thick-walled stainless steel or aluminum tubing. There is a pull-point situated on the wakeboarding tower, about 7feet from the water’s surface. A high pull-point gives the rider more control and makes it easier for the rider to maneuver. Another unique feature of the wakeboard motorboat is that the engine is rotated 180 degrees and placed in the front of the boat. This enables better weight distribution and also ensures the rider’s safety.

Basics of Wakeboarding:
Before beginning their wakeboarding experience, it is essential to have good quality equipment and an experienced driver. Nothing can ruin a wakeboarding experience like an inexperienced driver! Once all the equipment is set, you must figure out which ‘foot forward’ you are. You must figure out with which foot forward are you most comfortable. The bindings also must be adjusted according to your height and your comfort level. The bindings must be well secured. Most wakeboards come with pre-attached fins. You must make sure these fins are tightly secured. Long fins give a feeling of stability in the water. While shorter fins give a looser feeling and provides more freedom to maneuver in the water. Longer fins are recommended for beginners.

Wakeboarding Maneuvers:
Once the basics of wakeboarding have been mastered, it is time to take your skill to the new level. Mastering these maneuvers requires patience and can be dangerous if proper safety measures are not in place. Thus, it is advisable to always have an experienced mentor and driver, and also always wear a life vest. Some of the most popular wakeboarding maneuvers are:
• Fashion Air
• Surface 360
• Front roll
• Back roll
• Air Krypt

Wakeboarding is an addictive sport. It constantly challenges the rider and there are endless maneuvers to master. So, keep wakeboarding, keep learning and above all, always be safe.
